Minahasa regency in North Sulawesi Province of Indonesia is a highly recommended destination for visitors who are interested in butterflywatching and sightseeing. The forest and farmland of Minahasa is the habitat of a lot of species of butterflies such as: Common Birdwing (Troides helena), Lime Swallowtail (Papilio demoleus), Blanchard's Wood Nymph (Ideopsis vitrea), Blanchard's Tree Nymph (Idea blanchardii), The Clipper (Parthenos sylvia), Manado Yellow Tiger (Parantica menadensis), Neptis Ida Celebensis and Sulawesi Leafwing Butterfly (Doleschallia polibete celebensis).
Butterflies can be watched from morning until late afternoon before sunset. They can be watched along the alleyways of subdistrict town of Sonder that are decorated with flower plants, farmlands whose crops are flowering and along the forest edges.
During the butterfly watching tours, participants can take pictures using cell phone, pocket camera or D-SLR camera with telephoto lenses. There are also bridge cameras that are capable of taking macro and long distant pictures.
In addition to watching butterflies, participants could see daily activities of villagers in the highland of Minahasa. Most of them work as farmers. They grow rice, tomatoes, spring onion, kangkung, egg-plant, peanuts, corn, papaya, mango, banana, rambutan, clove, vanilla, coconut and etc.
The butterflywatching tour in Minahasa highland can be combined with sightseeing trip to Mount Mahawu, Lake Linow, Pine Forest and Waterfall.
Travelling to Minahasa
Minahasa is a regency in North Sulawesi Province of Indonesia. To reach it, visitors need to fly from their country to Jakarta, and then continue their trip to Manado city by domestic airlines such as Garuda, Lion Air, Batik Air, TransNusa.
Visitors can also fly from Singapore to Manado city. The airline that provides the flight service is Scoot Air. Chinese visitors can fly from Guangzhou to Manado city by China Southern Airlines. However, international direct flights are not available everyday.
