Susnguakti is the name of a forest in the south of Manokwari city. It is a highly recommended site for nature lovers who want to go hiking, camping, bird, and wildlife watching for a few days. It is the natural habitat of several species of paradise birds. The forest is the natural habitat of birds, mammals, reptiles, insects. There are hundreds of species of tropical plants that can be seen during tour in the rainforest.
Birds of Paradise are the main target of watching for visitors who go to the forest. They are active in the mornings and in the afternoons. Visitors can watch Lesser Birds of Paradise (Paradisaea minor), King Bird of Paradise (Cicinnurus regius), Magnificent Riflebird (Ptiloris magnificus), Common Paradise Kingfisher (Tanysiptera galatea).
Lesser Birds of Paradise are usually active in the mornings from 06.00 to 09.00. They can also be watched in the afternoons until before sunset time from 15.00 to 17.30.
The King Bird of Paradise shows up later in the mornings at around 08.00 to 10.30 morning time and in the afternoons at 15.00 to 17.00.

To watch them, visitors need to bring a good pair of binoculars such as the 10×42mm, 12×50 mm made by Nikon, Leica, Swarovski or other birding optic manufacturers. A spotting scope mounted on a tripod is also recommended.
Besides watching Birds of Paradise, tourists can also do night walk, with local guide and villagers, to see find Papua Dragon Tree Lizard, Cuscus Possum, Ground Skink, and snakes. Make sure that every tour participant has got a flashlight/ torch and wears shoes and socks.
In general, visitors spend around 3 to 4 days exploring the rainforest of Susnguakti to watch birds, butterflies, cuscus possum. There is a basecamp for tourists that has been built by local villagers. It is located at a small stream. There are cooking and eating utensils, as well as mattrasses that are provided by Charles Roring for tourists who want to stay there for a few days.There is no toilet in the forest. Tourists can use the small stream to wash and as as toilet.
In order to visit Susnguakti forest, you need to fly from your country to Jakarta city - the capital of Indonesia. After that, you need to continue your trip by flying to Manokwari city (the capital ot West Papua province).
The rainforest of Susnguakti is a lower montane forest. To reach it, visitors need to go by car from Manokwari city for 1 hour, and continue their trip by hiking steep slopes of the Arfak mountains for one and a half hours to reach the base camp. Tourists who want to go there have to be accompanied by local guide who really knows where Susnguakti forest is.
