Tambrauw is an important tourist destination in the world for anyone who wants to watch turtles. The nesting season has just started. It will last for the next few months from April until around July. Certain species of turtle even lands as late as September before the begining of wave season. The regency has got long beaches where several species of turtles land to lay their eggs. They are Leatherback Turtles (Dermochelys coriacea), Olive Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas), and Hawksbill Sea Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata).
Turtle Watching in Tambrauw |
The turtles are facing threats that endanger their population including hunting activities for meat and eggs, suffocation from drifting plastic wastes, and natural predators such as soa-soa monitor lizard, wild boar, and crocodile.
Ecotourism is considered as an alternative income generation scheme that can be introduced to local people in order to help them protect the natural habitat of turtles.
Visitors who travel to Tambrauw and other regencies in West Papua will be served by local people who live along the coastal area. By providing guiding service, accommodation, food, and handicrafts, local people can earn money to support their life and the educational needs of their children.

As a tourist guide, I could organize a trip for visitors to Tambrauw regency to watch turtles, enjoy swimming and snorkeling as well as do hiking in the forest to watch birds and other wild animals. Visitors will be able to see the natural beauty of Tambrauw both along its beaches and its mountain ridges.
