Wondama regency is a beautiful tourist destination for nature lovers. It has got a lot of tropical islands that are mostly surrounded by coral reef. Its marine life is abundant with various kinds of corals and reef fishes. Most of the land in Wondama is covered by tropical rainforest that becomes the natural habitat of a lot of plants and animals.
The Beautiful Nature of Wondama |
I traveled to Wondama last month and did some hiking and birding trips in Wondiboi nature reserve. I saw birds such as Blyth's Hornbill, Pinon Imperial Pigeon, Wompoo Fruit Dove, Slender-billed Cuckoo Dove, Grey Crow, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Black-capped Lory, Rainbow Lorikeet, Palm Cockatoo, Eclectus Parrot, Yellow-billed Kingfisher, Common Paradise Kingfisher, Red Myzomela, Golden Myna, Yellow-faced Myna, Spangled Drongo, Lesser Birds of Paradise, and a lot more. I brought my binoculars, spotting scope and camera so, I could enjoy the birding trips well.
There are a number of birding sites in regency both in the Wondama peninsula and in the islands. To identify the birds, I used field guide book Birds of New Guinea by Thane K. Pratt and Bruce Beehler. I received another field guide last month which was Birds of New Guinea including Bismarck Archipelago and Bougainville written by Phil Gregory. These field guides are complete references for birding visitors who want to explore the rainforest and coastal areas of not only Wondama regency but also the whole New Guinea and its satellite islands.
In addition to birding, I also did snorkeling to see the marine life. It was a great experience. I was able to see a lot of fish including anemonefish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, pipefish, spadefish, damsel, and a lot more. I brought 3 sets of snorkeling masks so I could enjoy snorkeling with some friends.
The capital of Wondama regency is Rasiei. It can be reached by small passenger plane Cessna Caravan 208 or by passenger ferry from Manokwari city.
As a tourist guide, I offer vacation tours to Wondama regency for visitors who want to see its rainforest for birding and wildlifw watching as well as enjoy snorkeling over its pristine coral reef.
