I visited Waigeo island in Raja Ampat regency around two weeks ago. I went there to watch tropical birds that live in the rainforest as well as sea birds that live along the coastal region. I stayed in northeast region of Waigeo island for 5 days/ 4 nights. It was a nice experience because I could see a lot of birds. Some of them were Black-capped Lory, Oriental Dollarbird, Blyth's Hornbill, Brahminy Kite, Brown Cuckoo Dove, Palm Cockatoo, Shining Flycatcher, Papuan Black Myzomela, Hooded Butcherbird, Helmetted Friarbird, Eclectus Parrot and a lot more.

In addition to rainforest birds, I also saw various species of sea or coastal birds including Beach Kingfisher, Sacred Kingfisher, Willie Wagtail, Eastern Yellow Wagtail, Beach Stone Curlew, Wimbrel, Radjah Shelduck, Lesser Frigatebird, Eastern Osprey, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Striated Heron, Eastern Reef Egret, and Bridled Tern.

One night when I was about to sleep, a villager called me from outside of my bedroom. He said that a sea turtle had just landed at the beach to lay eggs. I hurriedly got up from my bed, grabbed my camera and walked out of my bedroom. After that I and the villager ran to the beach where the turtle was. When we arrived, the turtle was nearly finished in laying her eggs. She was surrounded by tens of villagers. Because, she was laying her eggs behind the kitchen of a villagers house, she was exposed to lights from the nearby houses and from the torches of the villagers. Red light should be used when approaching the turtle. Unfortunately, the villagers did not have the red light torches. The turtle continued to lay eggs event though she was surrounded by villagers.

I brought my camera. It was a Canon 200D with Tamron 150-600 mm G2 lenses. I had to walk back away from the turtle until around 12 meters from her in order to fully put her into the viewfinder of my camera. I was able to make some pictures of the turle. She was an Olive-ridley Turtle.

Raja Ampat is a great destination for tourists who like nature. It is located in remote region but it can easily be visited by tourists. To reach this beautiful islands, visitors need to take international flight from their country to Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. After that, they could continue their trip by taking a domestic flight to Sorong city. As a tourist guide, I could meet visitors at the airport and organize their trip to Raja AmpT islands.
